Creation of the Atmospheric Steam Engine
The atmospheric steam engine was created by inventor and blacksmith, Thomas Newcomen in 1712. Often referred to as the Newcomen Engine, this device allowed atmospheric pressure to push the piston into its correct position: inside the cylinder. The engine was then operated by compressing the steam being drawn into the cylinder, building a small vacuum.
The invention of the atmospheric steam engine made a sizable impact on the Industrial Revolution, as after it was invented, all the working factories and industries no longer needed to be located near rivers, they could locate anywhere. It also made a huge impact on the means of transportation that was used throughout the Industrial Revolution to transport goods and workers.
